When considering the nature of the world, we must accept that not everything can be black or white, right or wrong. Why? Because such absolutes blunt creativity. What inspires creative action is precisely because something isn’t known, what I prefer to call “the area of unfoldment.” Creativity is precipitated by lack or a sense of a “blind spot” – whether that blind spot be physical or mental – requiring creative action to fulfill the gap.
This is why it is perfectly all right (perhaps even preferable) to not know absolutely or not have all the answers to life’s challenges and situations. If such things were known, the spark of creativity would be stifled into darkness. Quite frankly, creativity wouldn’t be needed. At that point, all the fun goes out of the universe because all things would be done by routine and habit. Life itself would be pointless, as Life is the expression of creativity in motion, an unfoldment of the Infinite into the Finite. Consciousness requires creative freedom in order to grow, to thrive, and would not have such existence if the mode of creativity were not to be needed. Heck – why is it we incarnate? To unfold – a process of learning, evolution, and the working out of those “blind spots” or “unfulfilled areas” within our own spirits that have yet to be discovered.
Yet we focus (and struggle) so much for what the answers to Life are, so that we can live life “appropriately.” In other words, so we don’t have to make decisions and take responsibility for them; so we don’t have to engage Life through its acts of creativity. To be creative means to engage the mind to make decisions – what to do, how to do – the very gears of creativity in motion. And yes, be responsible for the outcome. It’s as if these days a lot people say or hope: “Life should already be figured out and complete, so I don’t have to engage in this work.” But if everything were ideally already understood, Life would be mechanical, boring, and without any chance at evolution. Growth – thus fulfilment – requires creativity in order to explore and come to needed realizations. Black or white answers of finality stop creativity in its tracks; it totally kills it, and freezes any unfoldment of Self.
So, it’s imperative to become comfortable and welcome “uncertainty” and “not knowing.” “Not knowing” simply means the opportunity is there to Create. If it weren’t, you would feel robbed, meaningless, and without purpose.
A lot of emphasis in our culture is placed on “being right.” “Being right” means “being acceptable” but these ideas are always fluid. “Being right” also means “No need for creativity – it’s already figured out!” Yet, nobody works this way, even if they wanted to. We have an inner drive to be creative in some form, even if it is simply challenging the status quo, otherwise evolution would never occur. So, even in those areas where we think we are “right” and “know it all,” there will always be a few radicals who wish to challenge such notions – and they are right for doing so. That’s creativity in action! That’s the stuff of life right there.
In a nutshell, it’s okay not to know what to do, how to do it, or not know all the answers. This is what drives creativity. It’s actually what makes Life possible – otherwise, you’re simply a machine. It’s what drives the engine of unfoldment within the nature of Self.
One could make the argument – since evolution cannot exist without creativity – there is no such thing as “absolute” black or white, with anything. There may be consensus in terms of what is more pleasing or less pleasing, but the “absoluteness” is still quite absent. As seen from a review of history itself, value systems change constantly. Absoluteness simply doesn’t exist in the way we would like to consider it, otherwise (again) creativity would not be needed or necessary. Life itself would be utterly pointless.
Don’t expect (or even want) black or white answers, as that kills creativity. You might want a “right now” correct answer, and that is fine for certain things, but know that even those answers are predicated on Now moment conditions, which may end up shifting or changing at a later date – invalidating the Now “correct” answer and demanding a new one, thus forcing the engagement of the creative process all over again.
Also, don’t look out upon the world as “everyone is looking for black or white, so I must figure out what that is.” It is true, most are looking for the black or white, but you won’t get a straight answer as to what those answers are. Most people honestly don’t know and are going on vague feelings/ideas. And for those who claim to know, you will find their answers don’t necessarily agree across the board with others who also “claim to know.” Again, evolution requires creativity and abhors “absolute” finite completions. Infinity looking to create an analogy within the Finite would never create a black/white analog – that is totally counter to Infinite reality. No growth can exist when something is considered “complete.” No more creativity to be had at that point. No more Life. Ugh.
Make friends with uncertainty and not knowing. Without them, you wouldn’t have a life to live. IT’S OKAY NOT TO KNOW or NOT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS … otherwise the creative nature of Life would be stifled and you would no longer unfold. YOU CANNOT HAVE LIFE IN ABSOLUTENESS. Look upon those blind spots joyfully instead of fearfully! Allow the universe to surprise you, otherwise you will tromp through life dreading your own evolution. It need not be so, as creativity is the blissful action of Life.
You looking in the world for absolutes also stunts the creativity of other forms of life. It denies their evolutionary prospects.
Please, take some time to ponder this and ask: What is your relationship to creativity in your life?
